What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used commonly in the printing, typesetting and design industries. Lorem Ipsum has been the standard dummy text of the printing industry since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. Its roots, however, go much deeper: the text is derived from "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical treatise on ethics written by Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The original passage discusses the theories of pleasure and pain.

The modern revival of Lorem Ipsum is credited to the desktop publishing software of the 1980s, which bundled the passage as a sample text template. It then spread through page-layout applications such as Aldus PageMaker, and later through web design templates. Despite being centuries old, it remains ubiquitous because it solves a genuine problem — and because designers recognise it instantly as a signal that "content goes here".
